anti-proverbs

Corrupted folk wisdom

Anti-proverbs are humorous twists on familiar proverbs that subvert the original meaning or moral.

They work by altering a word or phrase to create absurdity or cynicism: A penny saved is a penny (truncated for ironic effect), The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese, Where there's a will, there's a relative.

The humor depends on recognition of the original.
