anal stage
Second psychosexual period
The anal stage is a phase in Freudian psychosexual development, roughly ages one to three, when a child's pleasure and conflict center on bowel control.
Freud theorized that how toilet training unfolds shapes adult personality—harsh training supposedly produces the "anal retentive" personality: rigid, orderly, obsessed with control.
The theory remains influential in psychoanalytic circles though largely rejected by mainstream psychology.
