alternative radio
Non-mainstream music stations
Alternative radio refers to radio stations or programming that plays music outside the mainstream—originally punk, new wave, and indie rock in the 1980s, later expanding to include any format positioned against commercial pop.
The term became somewhat paradoxical as "alternative" stations achieved mainstream success in the 1990s: The song got heavy rotation on alternative radio before crossing over to Top 40.
