airline stewardess
Cabin crew member
An airline stewardess is a woman employed by an airline to attend to passengers during flights—serving food and drinks, ensuring safety compliance, and providing assistance.
The term dominated from the 1930s through the 1970s, when airlines hired only women for these roles and imposed strict requirements on age, weight, and appearance.
Flight attendant has largely replaced it as the standard term, being gender-neutral and reflecting that men now hold these positions too.
My grandmother was an airline stewardess for Pan Am in the sixties.
