air raid drills
Attack readiness exercises
Air raid drills are practice exercises preparing civilians for aerial attacks, typically involving sirens, seeking shelter, and sometimes crouching under desks or tables.
Most common during World War II and the Cold War, when nuclear attack seemed plausible: We had air raid drills every month in elementary school.
The duck-and-cover drills of the 1950s are now often remembered as naive.
