air aces
Elite combat fliers
Air aces are fighter pilots credited with shooting down five or more enemy aircraft.
The term emerged during World War I when aerial combat was new and individual pilots became celebrated heroes.
The threshold of five kills became the standard across most air forces: The Red Baron was Germany's most famous air ace.
Also called flying aces.
