advantage rule
Referee allows continuation
The advantage rule in sports like soccer and rugby allows referees to let play continue after a foul if stopping would benefit the offending team.
Rather than immediately whistling for the infraction, the referee waits to see if the fouled team retains possession or a scoring opportunity: The ref played advantage and they scored on the break.
If no advantage materializes, the referee can still call the original foul.
