activation fees
Service initiation costs
Activation fees are one-time charges for setting up a new service or account, especially for mobile phones, cable, or utilities.
The fee ostensibly covers administrative costs of establishing the account, though critics view them as hidden charges that inflate advertised prices: The phone was cheap but the activation fee added fifty dollars.
