Weeping Angels

Frozen when observed

Weeping Angels are fictional creatures from the British television series *Doctor Who*, introduced in 2007.

They appear as stone statues resembling angels covering their faces, but they can only move when unobserved—the moment you blink or look away, they attack.

The concept plays on childhood fears about statues and the terror of not being able to look away: Don't blink. Blink and you're dead.

The phrase has become shorthand for any threat that advances only when you're not watching.
