War of Spanish Succession
European throne dispute
The War of Spanish Succession (1701–1714) was a European conflict triggered when the Spanish king died without an heir and France's Louis XIV claimed the throne for his grandson.
Britain, Austria, the Dutch Republic, and other powers fought to prevent French dominance.
The war ended with the Treaty of Utrecht, which maintained a balance of power by keeping the French and Spanish crowns separate.
