Venice ghetto
Segregated Jewish neighborhood
The Venice ghetto was the area of Venice where Jews were required to live beginning in 1516, the first such legally mandated Jewish quarter in Europe.
The word *ghetto* itself likely derives from this place—possibly from the Venetian word for the nearby iron foundry.
The term now applies to any urban area where a minority group is concentrated, whether by law, economics, or social pressure: the Warsaw ghetto, inner-city ghettos.
