US Route 1
Eastern seaboard artery
US Route 1 is a major north-south highway running along the eastern seaboard of the United States, stretching from Key West, Florida to Fort Kent, Maine at the Canadian border.
Originally part of the first numbered highway system established in 1926, it predates the Interstate system and passes through many historic town centers rather than bypassing them.
Much of its length parallels Interstate 95, which has absorbed most long-distance traffic, leaving Route 1 as a slower alternative through coastal communities.
