USS Nautilus
First atomic sub
USS Nautilus was the world's first operational nuclear-powered submarine, launched by the United States Navy in 1954.
Its nuclear reactor allowed it to remain submerged far longer than diesel-electric submarines, revolutionizing naval warfare.
In 1958, Nautilus became the first vessel to complete a submerged transit beneath the North Pole.
