Tobacco Road
Southern sharecropper saga
Tobacco Road refers to the impoverished rural South, particularly areas of Georgia and the Carolinas associated with tobacco farming and extreme poverty.
The term comes from Erskine Caldwell's 1932 novel depicting destitute Georgia sharecroppers, later a long-running Broadway play.
It evokes images of grinding rural poverty, ramshackle housing, and desperate circumstances: He grew up on Tobacco Road before making it to the city.
