Threepenny Opera

Beggar-world Weimar musical

The Threepenny Opera is a 1928 musical theater work by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, a modernized adaptation of John Gay's 18th-century *Beggar's Opera*.

Set in London's underworld, it satirizes capitalism and bourgeois morality through the criminal antihero Macheath.

Its most famous song, "Mack the Knife," became a jazz standard.

The title refers to the cheap admission price, suggesting theater for common people.
