The Time Machine
Temporal transport device
*The Time Machine* is H.G.
Wells's 1895 novella about a Victorian inventor who travels to the distant future, where humanity has diverged into two species—the passive Eloi and the predatory Morlocks.
The title also names the vehicle itself.
The phrase now serves as shorthand for any device enabling time travel: Every sci-fi show needs its time machine.
More loosely, anything that evokes the past—an old song, a photograph—can be called a time machine: This album is a time machine back to high school.
