Tasmanian tigers

Lost striped predators

Tasmanian tigers were large carnivorous marsupials native to Australia, Tasmania, and New Guinea, now presumed extinct since the 1930s.

Also called thylacines, they had distinctive dark stripes across their backs resembling a tiger's markings.

Despite the name, they were not related to tigers but were the largest known carnivorous marsupials of modern times.

Scientists are attempting to revive the Tasmanian tiger through genetic engineering.
