Stepford Wives
Suburban automaton women
Stepford Wives refers to women who seem robotically perfect—submissive, domestic, and lacking independent personality.
From the 1972 novel and 1975 film about a suburban town where husbands replace their wives with obedient android duplicates.
The term critiques conformity and the suppression of women's autonomy: The neighborhood felt like something out of Stepford Wives—every lawn immaculate, every wife smiling blankly.
