Spemann organizer
Dorsal lip region
The Spemann organizer is a region of embryonic tissue that directs the development of surrounding cells, essentially telling neighboring tissue what to become.
Located on the dorsal lip of the blastopore in amphibian embryos, it orchestrates the formation of the neural tube and body axis.
Named for embryologist Hans Spemann, whose transplant experiments showed that this tissue could induce a second complete body axis when grafted to another embryo.
The term extends to analogous organizing regions in other vertebrates.
