Soviet republic
USSR member nation
A Soviet republic was a state governed by councils (soviets) of workers, soldiers, or peasants, theoretically giving power to the laboring classes.
The term applied to the constituent republics of the Soviet Union and to short-lived revolutionary governments elsewhere: the Bavarian Soviet Republic lasted less than a month.
The system claimed to be more democratic than parliamentary government, though in practice the Communist Party controlled the soviets.
