Protoceratops

Beaked Cretaceous herbivore

Protoceratops is a genus of small herbivorous dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous period, found primarily in what is now Mongolia.

About the size of a sheep, it had a distinctive bony frill extending from the back of its skull and a parrot-like beak.

The name means "first horned face," though it lacked the prominent horns of later ceratopsians like Triceratops.

Numerous fossils have been discovered, including nests with eggs, making it one of the best-understood dinosaurs.
