Owain Glyndŵr
Welsh independence leader
Owain Glyndŵr was a Welsh nobleman who led a major revolt against English rule in the early 15th century.
He declared himself Prince of Wales in 1400 and for several years controlled much of the country, establishing a Welsh parliament and seeking alliances with France and Scotland.
Though the rebellion ultimately failed and Glyndŵr disappeared around 1415, he remains a powerful symbol of Welsh independence and national identity: Owain Glyndŵr is to Wales what William Wallace is to Scotland.
