Occupied France
Nazi-controlled Paris region
Occupied France refers to the zones of France under German military control during World War II, from the 1940 armistice until liberation in 1944.
Initially, Germany occupied the northern and western regions while the Vichy government administered the south; after 1942, German forces occupied the entire country.
The term distinguishes this period and territory from Free France, the resistance movement and government-in-exile led by Charles de Gaulle.
