Nigerian prince scammer

Fake royalty con

A Nigerian prince scammer is someone who runs advance-fee fraud schemes, typically via email, claiming to be royalty or a wealthy official who needs help transferring money out of a country.

The victim is promised a share of millions but must first pay various "fees" that escalate until they realize they've been conned.

The scam became so associated with Nigeria in the 1990s and 2000s that Nigerian prince became shorthand for any transparently fraudulent scheme: That investment opportunity sounds like a Nigerian prince scammer.
