Morrison Formation

Dinosaur-rich rock layer

The Morrison Formation is a distinctive sequence of Late Jurassic sedimentary rock found across the western United States, famous as one of the world's richest sources of dinosaur fossils.

Named after the town of Morrison, Colorado, where it was first identified, this geological layer has yielded specimens of iconic species including Allosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Apatosaurus.

The formation spans multiple states from Montana to New Mexico and represents ancient river floodplains and lakebeds from roughly 150 million years ago.
