McAfee is antivirus software, once among the most widely installed security programs on personal computers.
The company was founded by John McAfee, who became notorious for his eccentric behavior and legal troubles before his death in 2021.
The software became synonymous with intrusive pop-up notifications and difficult uninstallation, making "McAfee" shorthand for bloatware that's hard to remove: My new laptop came with McAfee preinstalled.
