Göbekli Tepe
Prehistoric Turkish sanctuary
Göbekli Tepe is an archaeological site in southeastern Turkey containing massive stone structures dating to roughly 9500 BCE—predating Stonehenge by about six thousand years.
The site features T-shaped pillars arranged in circles, many carved with animal reliefs.
Its discovery challenged assumptions about prehistoric societies, suggesting hunter-gatherers built monumental architecture before developing agriculture or permanent settlements.
