Elephant Man
Deformed sideshow exhibit
Elephant Man refers to Joseph Merrick (1862–1890), an Englishman whose severe physical deformities made him a Victorian-era sideshow attraction before he found refuge at London Hospital.
His story, dramatized in film and theater, became iconic for themes of human dignity beneath disfigurement.
The term sometimes describes anyone with similar dramatic physical abnormalities, though this usage can be offensive.
