Eight Mile

City-suburb dividing line

Eight Mile is a road in the Detroit metropolitan area that marks the boundary between the city and its northern suburbs.

The name has become shorthand for Detroit's stark racial and economic divide—white suburbs to the north, predominantly Black city to the south.

The 2002 film *8 Mile* starring Eminem brought the term wider recognition as a symbol of class struggle and hip-hop authenticity: He grew up on Eight Mile, barely scraping by.
