Dogtown

Venice Beach locale

Dogtown is a nickname for rough, down-at-heel urban neighborhoods, often applied to areas perceived as neglected or working-class.

Several specific places carry the name, most notably the section of Santa Monica and Venice in Los Angeles where skateboarding culture emerged in the 1970s: The Z-Boys put Dogtown on the map.

Other Dogtowns exist across the United States, typically named for stray dogs, prairie dog colonies, or general scrappiness.
