Darwin Awards

Fatal foolishness recognition

Darwin Awards are mock honors given to people who supposedly improve the human gene pool by removing themselves from it through their own spectacularly foolish actions—typically dying or becoming sterile through preventable stupidity.

The concept, named after evolutionist Charles Darwin, spread as internet humor in the 1990s.

Stories are often apocryphal or embellished: He won a Darwin Award for trying to bungee jump with regular rope.

The term implies dark amusement at fatal idiocy rather than sympathy.
