Chocolate City

Capital's demographic moniker

Chocolate City is a nickname for a city with a predominantly Black population, most famously Washington, D.C.

The term was popularized by the 1975 Parliament album of the same name, which celebrated Black urban culture and political power.

Other cities with significant Black majorities have also been called Chocolate City, including Detroit, Atlanta, and New Orleans.

The nickname carries pride in Black community and influence: D.C. was the original Chocolate City.
