Children's Crusade
Medieval youth march
The Children's Crusade was a disastrous religious movement in 1213 in which thousands of young people attempted to march to the Holy Land, believing their purity would succeed where armed crusaders had failed.
Most participants died, were sold into slavery, or turned back before reaching their destination.
The term now describes any idealistic but doomed effort led by the young or naive: The student protest was dismissed as a children's crusade.
