Buddhist enlightenment
Liberation from suffering
Buddhist enlightenment is the state of awakening that marks the goal of Buddhist practice—liberation from suffering and the cycle of rebirth.
The Buddha achieved enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, and the path he taught aims to bring others to the same realization.
Unlike Western notions of enlightenment as intellectual progress, Buddhist enlightenment involves direct insight into the nature of reality and the dissolution of ego: After years of meditation, she experienced a glimpse of enlightenment.
Also called nirvana or bodhi.
