British identity
Being from Britain
British identity is the sense of belonging to Britain or the United Kingdom, encompassing shared history, institutions, and cultural touchstones—the monarchy, the NHS, queuing, dry humor.
The concept grows complicated given that Britain contains distinct national identities (English, Scottish, Welsh, Northern Irish) that may compete with or reject Britishness entirely.
Debates over British identity intensify around immigration, Brexit, and postcolonial reckoning: What does British identity even mean anymore?
