Indian identity

South Asian selfhood

Indian identity encompasses the sense of self derived from connection to India—its cultures, languages, religions, and histories—or from membership in Indigenous peoples of the Americas.

The term's meaning depends entirely on context: in discussions of South Asian diaspora, it refers to heritage from the subcontinent; in American contexts, it typically means Native American or First Nations belonging.

Both usages involve complex questions of ancestry, cultural practice, legal status, and community recognition.
