Big Sky Country
Treasure State's alias
Big Sky Country is a nickname for Montana, referring to the state's vast open landscapes and unobstructed horizon that make the sky appear unusually expansive.
The phrase evokes the American West's wide prairies and sparse population: We drove through Big Sky Country without seeing another car for an hour.
Montana's license plates have carried the slogan since 1967.
