Bay of Pigs invasion

Failed Cuban operation

The Bay of Pigs invasion was a failed 1961 attempt by CIA-trained Cuban exiles to overthrow Fidel Castro's government.

The invaders landed at the Bay of Pigs on Cuba's southern coast but were quickly defeated, becoming a major embarrassment for the Kennedy administration and strengthening Castro's position.

The phrase now serves as shorthand for botched covert operations: It turned into a real Bay of Pigs.
