American robins

Orange-chested yard birds

American robins are medium-sized songbirds common across North America, recognizable by their orange-red breast and gray-brown back.

They're often seen hopping across lawns, hunting for earthworms.

Despite the name, they're thrushes, not closely related to the European robin—early colonists named them for the similar red breast.

Their return signals spring in northern regions.
