7-10 split
Corner pins standing
A 7-10 split is the most difficult spare in bowling—two pins standing at opposite corners of the back row with a wide gap between them.
Converting the split requires hitting one pin at an angle that sends it across the lane to knock down the other, which rarely succeeds.
The term extends figuratively to any situation with extremely low odds: Winning that contract was like picking up a 7-10 split.
