yawp

Loud, coarse complaint

Yawp is a loud, harsh cry or yelp—the sound a dog or bird might make.

By extension, it means to speak loudly or complainingly, or the noise itself: Stop your yawping.

Walt Whitman gave the word literary life: "I sound my barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world." Also spelled yawl or yaup.
