word associations
Connected idea chains
Word associations are mental connections between words or concepts, where one term triggers recall of another.
The links may be semantic (doctor → nurse), phonetic (cat → hat), or personal (beach → childhood summers).
Psychology uses word association tests to probe unconscious thoughts: a clinician says a word, and the subject responds with whatever comes to mind.
The game version has players building chains: We played word associations until someone got stuck on "orange.".
