wood engraver
Cuts printing blocks
A wood engraver is a person who creates images by cutting into the end grain of a block of wood, typically boxwood.
The technique produces finer detail than woodcut, which uses the side grain.
Wood engraving flourished in 19th-century book illustration before photographic reproduction: Thomas Bewick was the most celebrated wood engraver of his era.
