witches' sabbath
Midnight occult assembly
A witches' sabbath is a supposed midnight gathering where witches meet with the Devil to perform rituals, dance, and engage in debauchery.
The concept emerged from medieval European witch-trial testimony, much of it extracted under torture.
The term now appears mostly in historical discussions of witch hunts or in fantasy fiction: The painting depicted a witches' sabbath on a moonlit hilltop.
