whipping posts

Lashing tethering stations

Whipping posts were upright wooden posts to which people were tied to receive flogging as legal punishment.

Common in colonial America and earlier England, they stood in public squares where the community could witness sentences carried out: The thief received twenty lashes at the whipping post.

The term now appears mainly in historical contexts or metaphorically for any site of public humiliation or punishment.
