welching

Dodging a debt

Welching is failing to honor a bet or obligation, especially by refusing to pay what's owed: He welched on the debt.

The word carries connotations of dishonesty and untrustworthiness.

Also spelled *welshing*, though both forms are considered offensive to Welsh people due to the ethnic slur embedded in the term.
