wedding banns
Church marriage notice
Wedding banns are a public announcement in church of an intended marriage, traditionally read aloud on three successive Sundays before the ceremony.
The practice allows anyone who knows of a legal impediment—such as an existing marriage—to come forward and object.
Though largely ceremonial today, banns remain customary in some religious traditions: The banns were read without objection.
