weather spotter
Volunteer sky monitor
A weather spotter is a trained volunteer who observes and reports severe weather conditions to the National Weather Service.
Spotters provide ground-level confirmation of phenomena that radar can't fully capture—tornadoes, hail size, flash flooding, wind damage.
They're especially active during storm season: The weather spotter reported a funnel cloud forming southwest of town.
Also called storm spotter.
