wag a finger
Silent parental warning
To wag a finger is to move it back and forth, typically the index finger raised and pointed, as a gesture of warning, scolding, or mild rebuke: She wagged a finger at the children and told them to behave.
The gesture conveys disapproval without severity, often from a position of authority or experience.
Figuratively, finger-wagging describes any moralizing or lecturing tone: The editorial was just more finger-wagging about screen time.
