virus mutation
Germ genetic shift
A virus mutation is a change in a virus's genetic material that occurs during replication.
These mutations happen naturally and frequently, sometimes producing variants that spread more easily, evade immunity, or cause different symptoms: The new virus mutation made the vaccine less effective.
Most mutations have little effect, but occasionally one gives a virus significant advantages.
